Blackbean cocktail cabinet on stand
As the first cabinet maker to have a solo exhibition at the
National Gallery of Victoria, Krimper holds a unique position in
the history of the crafts movement in Australia. Trained in
Europe where he was influenced by the simple elegant and classical
lines of the Beidermier style Krimper migrated to Australia in 1939
where he produced works that were of original design and superb
craftsmanship. Krimper did not make any preliminary drawings
when embarking on a new work. Utilising hardwoods from
Australia and the Pacific region, each timber would be worked
differently to accentuate its grain, colour or density.
Customers were supplied with wax and instructions about how to care
for their piece.
This cocktail cabinet consists of two cupboards that sit on a
wooden stand. The uppermost cupboard opens to reveal a
compartment with a mirror at the back with two small shelves on
either side. The bottom of this cupboard and the slide immediately
below it are also lined in a red material covered with glass
