Adrian Lawlor
(Unknown)
Painter, critic and writer Adrian Lawlor had a strong
interest in European contemporary art. Although he
experimented with different forms and styles, his paintings
received little recognition during his life time. A
colourist, Lawlor used symbols and abstracted forms in his work as
seen in this composition with its maritime theme.
As some two hundred of his works were destroyed by fire in 1939
and he stopped painting soon after 1940, this abstract is one
of a small body of extant early work by the artist. Lawlor
appears to have been the first artist in Australia to have adopted
the device of surrounding his works with a white frame
