The road to the ferry
Best known for his finely worked landscapes, Lloyd Rees worked,
studied and travelled overseas before settling in Sydney in the
1930s to work as a commercial artist. In The road to the
ferry, Rees has used undulating forms to capture the sense of space
and distance between the houses, harbour and distant city of
Sydney. Purchased by the Gallery in 1946, this painting was
at the time considered to be an adventurous acquisition of a modern
contemporary landscape. With its restricted palette of brown
and grey tones, the painting is characteristic of Rees' early
work.
