Friendship’s road
Four large panels make up this painting which is described by
the artist as "a strange mélange of my life…being friendly to
people and trying to maintain friendships with grace and
charm". Influenced by Pop expressionism Sansom has used
photomontage combined with figurative and abstract painting in this
largely biographical work. Vibrant colours, many of which are
further enhanced by the use of black outline or decoration, are
used along with photographs of the artist, and a list of streets in
which he has lived. A small wooden plaque purchased from a
tourist shop in Swanston Street, Melbourne, and located in the
bottom right hand corner, features the poem Friendship's Road upon
which this painting is based.
