Jeffrey Smart
The listeners
Jeffrey Smart studied at the South Australian School of Art and
later at the Académie Montmartre and La Grande Chaumière in
Paris. Resident in Italy since 1965, the artist has been
strongly influenced by painters as diverse as Paul Cézanne, Piero
della Francesca and Giorgio di Chirico.
A realist painter, with a powerful sense of colour and an eye
for the opportunities of placing seemingly ordinary things or
figures in unusual combinations, Smart has developed a style in
which the subject matter and its composition engage the viewer with
the sinister or disturbing side of the modern world. In this
work a sole figure lying in a field, looks towards a satellite dish
against dark billowing clouds on the horizon, creating a scene
which offers many opportunities for interpretation
