Elijah Walton
A woodland scene
Watercolorist and painter Elijah Walton returned to England
circa 1860 from Australia. Best known for his romantic and
colourful watercolours and illustrated books on the Alps, Walton,
who studied at Birmingham School of Art and the Royal Academy also
painted a number of scenes portraying everyday life.
Here, the artist has portrayed a young woman with two children,
all of whom are dressed in early Victorian style, resting at the
base of a tree. Painted in strong colours the tangled wood
has been rendered in painstaking detail right down to the dew on
the grass. This image is one of the few large paintings
known to have been produced by Elijah Walton.
