Spartan space
One of Arkley's pop inspired images painted in vibrant 'day-glo'
colours, Spartan space is based on the Schröder House, the
work of the architect and furniture designer Gerrit Reitveld who
was the first to realise the architectural ideas of de Stijl.
De Stjil or "The Style," which was one of Arkley's
favourite aesthetic movements, was the name applied to a European
movement whose work was characterised by primary colours, flat
rectangular areas and straight, horizontal or vertical lines.
In creating this work Arkley has not only manipulated the line work
and selected primary colours for the reproduction of the Schröder
House but has also added one of Reitveld's chairs and a table to
the austere interior.
