The night train

San Fransico born Mitty Lee Brown came to Australia as a child.  Influenced by the works of William Dobell and the English sculpter Henry Moore, Brown painted The night train while still a student at Sydney Techical College. Contemporary critics described her gifts of linear design and plastic arrangement as "striking" and noted that she was an artist of  "power and promise".

Based on a Navy photograph of four soldiers by Alec Murray, the classically modelled figures create a frieze like composition and the yellow and green tones capture the claustrophobic atmosphere within the train.
