Frederick Frith
The cattle of William Field (Tasmania)
By 1855 Frederick Frith, a painter and photographer who had
practised in England, Scotland and Ireland before coming to
Australia, had settled in Hobart where he worked as a portrait and
animal painter as well as a "chromatype" artist.
A well known breeder of prize livestock William Field, inherited
land in Northern Tasmania along with the country mansion Enfield
and a share in the family fortune. This painting of some of
Field's prize cattle set against a view of Enfiled has their names
- Miss Points, Mimic, Young Enfield, Faultless and Maiden -
inscribed on a strip of canvas attached to the base, and reflects
the owners pride in his cattle as well as the gentlemanly lifestyle
he enjoyed.
