John Glover
Italian Landscape
An artist with an
established career in England, John Glover continued to paint
European scenes as well as Australian landscapes after he arrived
in Tasmania in 1831. Italian landscape, formerly known as The
Road in the Pyrenees, is based on a view near Monterosi in the
hills north of Rome that is depicted in one of Glover's
sketch books.
One of Glover's last recorded paintings, Italian landscape was
begun on February 19, 1841. Both this painting and a watercolour
titled Classical landscape, Italy circa 1820 that is now in the
collection of the Tate Gallery London share several elements of
topography and subject matter.
