Hilda Rix Nicholas
The frugal meal
This Ballarat born artist attended the National Gallery of
Victoria School, Melbourne before travelling to Europe in 1907 to
continue her studies. Exposed to the work of the Post
Impressionists and Fauves, Rix Nicholas experimented with vibrant
colour and form before returning to Australia in 1916.
The frugal meal, with its carefully ordered arrangement
and orange, yellow and blue- green colour scheme, is a lively work.
The use of contrasting warm and cool colours is a style that she
favoured while at the artists' colony at Etaples, Picardy
(1910-1914). It not only helps to enliven the scene but also
reflects the bold modernist style that she developed in Europe.
