Clara Southern
A cool corner
The Yarra River with wattle trees in full bloom was a favourite
subject of the artist Clara Southern who studied at the National
Gallery Art School from 1883-87. Here in A cool corner it is the
yellow of the wattles that not only attracts the attention of the
viewer but also draws one into the intimately observed
landscape.
Painted at Warrandyte, where she established an artist's colony
in 1908, this tranquil scene with its soft grey blues and greens
and quietly flowing river, embodies a sensitivity for the poetry
and mysticism of the Australian bush for which Clara Southern is
much admired.
