Frederico del Campo
Over the Grand Canal, Venice
Peruvian-born del Campo studied in Madrid with Lorenzo Valles
who also worked and died in Italy.
Painted at a time when Venice was an essential part of the 19th
Century "Grand Tour," "Over the Grand Canal, Venice" captures the
view across the canal from near the Dogana, the former sea customs
post of the city near where the canal widens into the Lagoon.
Venice with its gondolas, watercraft and sunbaked buildings beneath
a vibrant blue sky was the subject of the main body of works
by del Campo and here the nearly thousand year old Campanile (bell
tower) de San Marco, that fell in 1902 and was rebuilt in 1912, can
be seen rising above the Doge's Palace and St Marks Basilica, both
of which are to the right of the tower.
