Benjamin Leader
The Village Inn, Worcester
Born in Worcester in 1831 Leader was one of the most
prolific and best known Victorian landscape painters. He was
an Associate and later a Member of the Royal Academy.
Set in Worcester, this view of a rambling village inn located
near a church with a Norman tower is one of two versions commenced
by Leader in January 1889.
Leader shows his mastery of the depiction of the effects of
light on water, capturing the reflections of the late afternoon sky
in the flooded fields and laneway in front of the inn. The
other related work, titled Peaceful evening, Hesperus is very
similar in its composition with the major difference being the
presence of a double gabled roof on the inn side of the tower.
