George Vicat Cole
Day's Lock on the Thames
The naturalist painter Vicat Cole first exhibited at the RA in
1853 and when awarded full membership in 1880 he was the first
landscape painter to have been recognized in this way for 30
years.
Known for his ability to capture the transient effects of light,
and noted for his scenes of ripe corn growing in the valley of the
River Thames, Vicat Cole has captured all of these features in this
work. Located near Abington, Day's Lock depicts a scene
that remains largely unchanged to the present time.
