This book, edited by John Stockdale from the concise reports of
the first Governor of the new Colony, Arthur Phillip and the
journals of officials, is one of the rare copies with hand-coloured
plates and the list of convicts. It is a key work, essential
to any library of Australiana.
As Governor Phillip mentions in the note on The
Kangooroo [sic], a number of the illustrations in his volume
came from the drawings and specimens sent back to London by the
Chief Surgeon John White.A number of images from this volume
reappeared in the later publications, plagiarised and altered.
