Ballarat and surrounding regions have been home to some very
serious art collectors who would regularly lend their private
treasures for public enjoyment.
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is now reviving this custom. The
result is a treasure chamber of interesting, unusual and valuable
artworks ands artefacts including a 200,000 year old Acheulean
stone hand axe, ambrotypes from the first decade of photography,
and prints created in a World War Two era internment camp as well
as fine works of art by major Australian artists.
