This exhibition showcases some of the Art Gallery of Ballarat's
recent acquisitions of ceramics and works on paper.
It includes all the works which the Gallery has acquired from
the works submitted for the Rick Amor Drawing Prizes of 2010 and
2012, including the two prize winners, Brent Harris'sStudy for
delugeand Ken Smith'sIn the light of history I.
Also included is the Djalkirri suite of prints by Fiona Hall.
This group of six works was created following Hall's participation
in a collaborative project with a group of Yolngu painters who have
clan connections to Blue Mud Bay in Eastern Arnhem Land.
One of the Yolngu artists involved in this project, Mulkun
Wirrpanda, is already represented in the collection and her
depiction of sea grass is included here. Another related recent
acquisition, a bark painting of a tropical water plant by Yolngu
artist Malaluba Gumana, is also included.
Over the past three years the Gallery has been building up its
fine collection of contemporary ceramics. The results of this
activity can be seen here, including a very important and
comprehensive gift of work by Petrus Spronk covering the entire
range of his black ware practice.
Other recent ceramics acquisitions contrast the European-derived
media of salt glaze and marbled porcelain with stonewares inspired
by the ceramic traditions of South East Asia and Japan.
