Our VCE sessions incorporate more in-depth visual analysis and use of interpretative frameworks. We offer programs which relate specifically to Visual Arts areas of study and address Learning outcomes of specific study design such as Australian History and Psychology.

Programs can also be offered for students completing the VCAL and Tertiary courses. We would be happy to discuss your requirements with you.

Exploring and Interpreting

1. Highlights of the Collection

An introduction to the Gallery's Permanent Collection including a brief history of the gallery and a tour of the permanent collections including the Gallery's rich collection of Australian Art from Colonial to Contemporary as well as International art, the Eureka Flag and art from the goldfields era, the Lindsay Family collection and Ballarat artists.

2. Indigenous Australian Art And Culture

Develop an understanding of the diversity of Australian Indigenous art, it's cultural and political significance, materials and techniques used in art production and spiritual connection to land. View and discuss a range of art works including bark paintings from Arnhem Land and paintings on canvas from the central desert

3. Eureka - The Eureka Uprising

View the Eureka flag and other original works to discover more about the Eureka rebellion of 1854 and life on the goldfields in Ballarat in the 1850s. Discuss the importance of design, construction and conservation of the flag and its relevance to Australian Culture and Identity.

4. VCE Psychology

Explore and discuss visual perception using original artworks from the Art Gallery of Ballarat's permanent collection.  Includes depth perception and Gestalt principles

5. Studio Arts focus tours
These tours provide inspiration for student's own art practice and also focus on skill development in visual analysis including:

  • understanding how artists interpret sources of inspiration;
  • using materials, techniques and processes;
  • creating aesthetic qualities and develop styles in their artwork.

Professional art practice, art industry contexts, display and presentation issues are also discussed.

5. Behind the Scenes and Front of House

Available: Term 3 - 12th July to 17 September 2010This presentation by the Gallery's Registrar and Education Officers covers the wide range of issues involved in the display of the Collection and temporary exhibitions in a regional gallery using specific examples, as well as a visit to storage to discuss and analyse many aspects of collection management. The areas covered could include:

  • Different storage methods for the wide range of media types found in a regional collection
  • Methods and problems with the transport & movement of art objects
  • Environmental controls in a gallery, discussing specific Ballarat conditions
  • Aspects of art conservation, with current examples
  • Exhibition design and display, possibly with access to the curator or the
  • Gallery's director for further discussion
  • Marketing and sponsorship
  • Travelling exhibitions vs. in-house exhibitions

6. VCE Art Focus tours

Students explore the social dimensions of visual art practice and art referencing Australian artists in the Gallery's Collection. These tours provide a dynamic opportunity to discuss and apply interpretive frameworks to the analysis of traditional and contemporary art
