Art Insight 26 September - Tom Darragh

Tom Darragh was Head of Geology at the Museum of Victoria until 1996 and was responsible for curating the Museum's Tertiary invertebrate collections. Although he retired in 2001, he has continued his association with the Museum. He has a long-standing interest in the arts of engraving and lithography in 19th century Victoria, particularly focussing on the personalities involved and has also undertaken research on 19th century German scientists and intellectuals in Victoria.

Let's Talk Poetry

Ballarat actor and poet Barry Breen reads and leads discussion on some of his favourite poems. Today's featured poem links with the Capturing Flora exhibition with a discussion of Australian landscape and bush poetry by poets incuding Henry Lawson, Les Murray, AD Hope, Judith Wright and Kenneth Slessor. Please feel free to bring your lunch.

Art Insight 10 October:
Louise Wilson on Margaret Flockton

The 27 years that Margaret Flockton spent as resident artist at the Herbarium of the Sydney Botanic Gardens marked a high point for Australian botanical art. During that time she produced nearly 1000 beautiful and detailed drawings of Australian specimens. Flockton's great-grand-niece Louise Wilson talks about the personal and professional life of this distinguished botanical artist in a preview of her biography of Flockton.

Art Insight 24 October: 
John Pastoriza-Piñol

John Pastoriza-Piñol is a contemporary accurate realist whose work presents many subversive allusions/narratives through in his choice of subject, which has been described as "unusual or macabre". His work has become daringly innovative with sculptural floating silhouettes devoid of grounding shadows, minimalist in their composition but rich in detail.

Musica Botanica

This recital draws inspiration from botanical works through a dynamic collection of European and Australian chamber music that offers new perspectives on colonial representations of the new country. Clarinettist Samantha Kelson Gray from nationally-renowned quartet Clarity joins local concert pianist Bronwyn Blaiklock to perform works by Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards, Elena Kats-Chernin, Margaret Sutherland, Claude Debussy and Paul Hindemith.

Artists Inspire Artistry
Friday 9 November, 12.30 - 2pm and Tuesday 13 November, 6 - 7.30pm
Capturing Flora exhibition galleries
Hear the beauty of botanical art celebrated in words in this presentation of new poetry, written by poets have honed their skills in responding to other art-forms and then chosen works from the exhibition as their inspiration. The results will be presented in a roving recital in front of the particular artworks. A collaboration between the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the University of Ballarat and Ballarat Writers Incorporated.

VOX: Flower Songs
Saturday 10 November, 7.30pm
Williamson Gallery
Ballarat-based classical a cappella ensemble VOX performs a selection of botanical songs including Benjamin Britten's Five Flower Songs as well as works by Stephen Leek, Matthew Orlovich, Morten Lauridsen, Gerald Finzi and more.

Westwind

Oddie Gallery

Ballarat musical ensemble Westwind presents a botanical-re;lated concert including "Of Flowers and the Green", an original piece in three movements by composer and multi-instrumentalist Geoffrey d'Ombraincelebrating Victorian Flora. Geoffrey is joined by Heather George on clarinet, Alison Robertson on flute and Kathryn Saunders on oboe. Free but donations to the Gallery Women's Association appreciated.

Workshops


The Microscopic Realm with Lauren Black
Friday 28 September, 10am - 4pm
 
Discovering and drawing the intricate detail of the world of plants involves a specialized set of skills. In this one-day workshop skilled botwanical artist Lauren will introduce her work and discuss how she goes about constructing her paintings. Participants will have the opportunity to explore various techniques used in pencil illustration to create a small botanical study. As well, several microscopes will also be available for making closer observations. This workshop will most benefit those who already have some drawings skills.

Cost: $65 or $60 for Members
